# How Brief values reward points and miles in rupees · Brief

A point’s value on Brief is an estimate, and every page shows what it rests on.

Each points currency on Brief carries one rupee figure: what a point is worth, marked as Brief’s estimate, with its basis and the day it was checked. It puts points, miles and cashback on one scale, so a card that earns points can be set against one that pays cash.

## What the figure means

The figure is a rupee value for one point. It is Brief’s, not the bank’s: a bank’s own rate can be its basis, and the line still says Brief’s estimate. It is not a rate any bank pays on request.

## Fixed rate

Where the programme sets what a point is worth in rupees, as cash against the bill or across its catalogue, the value is that rate. The page marks it as a fixed rate.

## Average of redemptions

Where a point buys different amounts on different redemptions (a flight on the bank’s portal, a voucher, a statement credit), the value is an average across the redemptions worth making with it. The page marks it as an average.

## Portal rates

A bank’s travel portal often gives a point more on flights and hotels booked through it than a voucher does. Where a portal rate is one of the redemptions worth making, it enters the average like any other.

## Transfer ratios

A transfer moves points to an airline or hotel programme at a ratio the bank sets. At 2 points to 1 mile, a point is worth half of Brief’s value for the mile. A bank point’s own value assumes no transfer, so a transfer can beat it; each bank’s page prints its ratios, and the Maharaja page works the arithmetic for every currency that moves there. Where one card on a shared currency transfers at its own ratio, that card carries its own value, and the page names the ratio it rests on.

## Baseline on a card page

A card page prints a rupee value a point at baseline: what a point gives in the card’s standard redemption. Where a card’s baseline and its currency’s value differ, the bank’s page shows both.

## What Brief’s estimate promises

That its basis is stated, that its date is printed, and that the figure on the page is the one the Brief app uses. It does not promise that a redemption pays that much: a catalogue, a ratio or a fee can change before a page does. Check the bank’s own redemption page before you move a large balance.

## The grade beside a value

The grade belongs to the redemption rates the value rests on, read the way the about page sets out. The value itself carries no grade. It is Brief’s estimate, and it says so.

## How often values are read again

Each value prints the day it was last checked. The banks’ terms pages are read every day at noon; a change to a redemption rate or a transfer ratio is a flag, and a person checks the value against its sources before the page moves. A value last checked more than six months ago is marked as aged.

## Who pays for it

No bank pays Brief, for a value or for anything else on a page, and no value is agreed with a bank.
